Lighting design is intrinsically tied to our physiological and psychological well-being, enabling us to be productive and comfortable in a space. Tastefully curating the lighting scheme allows us to orchestrate the space narrative for an ambient and comfortable spatial experience. Here are some steps to achieve a visually balanced and appropriately luminous space:

1 . Setting the overall composition of the room: Lighting designers’ recommendations should be included at the initial stage of design, where lighting takes the role of an important mediator for achieving the desired vision of spatial design. This includes gauging the brightness ratios between different interior surfaces—for a noticeable and dynamic appeal to the room.

2. Lighting contextually: Lighting designers should consider illumination according to the primary functions of the space. For example, task lighting can illuminate a work desk for better productivity, or accent lighting can highlight an art piece on the wall. A diverse range of moods and effects can be achieved using light beam control, object location, type or finish of the surface, time of the day a space is lit etc.

3. Accentuating the architectural character: The lighting fixtures selected should be carefully coordinated with the interior décor/theme and resonate with our interior lighting design. Concealed light fixtures with focused light beams can be used to highlight architectural details or interior decoration pieces for residential as well as commercial lighting designs. Bespoke decorative lighting fixtures like contemporary chandeliers or wall luminaires can be installed to add character to the existing interior design theme.

Smart Lighting: With the advancement in lighting technology, we can control the colours and intensity of light with just a tap on the phone. Along with making our lives convenient and getting the envisioned mood, integrating lighting systems such as Daylight Harvesting in our interior light design can also help in electricity preservation. When integrated at the conceptual stage of design, these can help execute the most creative design ideas.

While a considerable portion of the design is facilitated through experience and intuition, these steps will help as a checklist for you to achieve a memorable experience at your homes or offices.
